My name is Ria. Baking has been part of my whole life. Growing up on a farm, I can still remember pressing down balls of cookie dough with a fork when mom use to make them (eating raw dough was my favourite and still is). This happened mostly on rainy days when we couldn’t go outside. There was this long pantry filled with bottles of jams, preserves, chutneys and many, many large tins full of cookies.
Fast forwarding to the more recent years, the baking continued but more so for the family.
A few years back I inherited all moms cookery books on her passing and slowly started exploring her recipes of which all were tried and tested and written in her own handwriting. It is 5 years down the line and I am not even halfway with her one recipe book. All the ones I have tried are fool proof recipes with no hidden or left out ingredients. It’s the handwriting at times that needs deciphering though… Bless her soul. So that’s the foundation where it all started.
Backtracking 4 years, I decided to make gingerbread houses for a few friends… and little Christmas cookies. But it wasn’t until late last year that I realized I was really itching to do my own thing… and my love for cookies was born…
At first I stuck to the sugar cookie recipe everybody used throughout the world till I discovered that they were too fragile for posting across the country. I was determined to “go big or go home”. I experimented with recipes but nothing seemed to work the way I wanted them to. So I started from scratch and developed my own recipe. 2 massive failures but the 3rd time I got it 100% right. It was perfect in texture, lovely in taste, held its shape and didn’t spread or rise all over the pan. So I am proud of the fact that this recipe is my own creation. And I decided to follow my own ideas and ice the cookies in a style that I enjoy and which I believe would make many people happy. Now I am brave enough to say, there is nothing I cannot create on a cookie. People send me pictures of what they want and I do my best to get the cookies to look the same.
I am grateful to God for blessing me with the talents He entrusted me with and hope that I will continue to make people happy and they enjoy that which I create … be that through my baking or my hand crafts.
